Hyorin 효린 - Lonely 론리

Overall Score : 3.1/5

First, I don't know which one is the correct one, is it Hyorin or Hyolin? When she's in the group (Sistar or Sistar19), I remember it was "Hyorin". But now on her single promotion, the romanization turned to "Hyolin". I think it has something to do with Korean usually was not fluent in "r". Well I guess it didn't matter, as long as we all know who were we talking about.

Okay, sorry for being ignorant before. Now I know better about hangul and its romanization, and will not make this kind of comment again in the future (bow).
  • Musicality : 2.5/5

Started with piano, the melody reminded me of retro evergreen 80's song. Combined with guitar, bass, and simple drum, the song had a pure sound without any synthetic addition. With a simple structure, verse - chorus (repeated), ending bridge, then chorus again, there's no surprise in this song. It's a simple ballad, which was rarely found these days. At first the melody could brought you to a nostalgic, head-nodding mood, but then I found out why these kind of song was becoming rare. The repeated similar tone could be a bit boring. The song could quickly get old in our ear. I wished there was a bit of twist in the song, a rap perhaps, that could add more interesting point to this piece.

As for the integration with the vocal, Hyorin, who's known to have a powerful vocal, showed her capability to sing with soft voice here. Her voice fit perfectly with the melody. But she has so many potential and talent, I wished she could utilize some of it more to give this song a bit of an edge.

With such a catchy repetitive chorus, this easy-listening song turned out to have such sad meaning. Picturing a lonely life of oneself, wandering through the city with a black scarred heart, longing for someone to be by her side. The descriptive lyrics was able to capture the loneliness of a broken-heart and, in the ending part, a hopeful plea to be loved again. I wished Hyorin pronunciation of the 3 English word on the lyrics could be more clear (e.g. I heard "lonely her" but apparently it supposed to be "lonely heart")

Music Video

The music video showed an interesting concept of portraying the song. Majority of people may have different thoughts of how to visualized "lonely". Displaying mostly a clip of smiling lady strolling a round in the city, having fun all alone, one who didn't understand the lyric right away might have a totally different perception about the meaning of the video. I love the itsy-bitsy visual art that was shown every now and then. I like the ironic concept, but I think it'd be much interesting if it could be tied to the lyric a bit, perhaps by adding some plot or one contrast clip of the happy-yet-lonely lady.

Live performance:

The live performance seemed a bit bland compared to the MV. Maybe because it was not a song which was mainly promoted, there doesn't seem to be much effort to make the live performance more attractive. Watching only the singer standing and singing a ballad was monotonous. Even if it was hard for the singer to do stage act while singing ballad, at least they could add one or two dancers or models to help deliver the song's performance.

In Inkigayo (01 Dec 2013), the song's was not performed completely, the second verse were skipped. Hyorin was standing on a stage surrounded by white balloons. It was a nice stage, yet lack of persona.

In the comeback show, "Hyorin's Love & Hate", there was a bit more addition to the performance. There's a transparent stairs (which I love but only used in the front) and a guitarist companion. Yet still, I wish there was something more other than seeing her singing and the guitarist doing his thing. She could use the interlude time to perhaps have slight interaction or add a meaningful gesture.

On both performance, I could hear Hyorin's husky voice clearly. With her well-known vocal ability, she shouldn't had much trouble singing this ballad live. It's a pity the chorus was all prerecorded. Maybe if it weren't prerecorded, she could show a bit more emotion while singing, adding more soul to the performance.
