2NE1 - Missing You (그리워해요)

Overall Score : 3.5/5

I love it when a group decided to do something outside their comfort zone, outside the box, like 2NE1, who was famous for their dance and up-beat track, now again served us with powerful ballad. I love their previous ballad, "Lonely", and I think I love "Missing You" as much.

Musicality (5/5)

What I like about this song is that from musicality side, it sounded very simple without many additional synthetic sounds, it was focused on the group's vocal, yet still managed to become an interesting piece of work.

At first it was started with an each member vocal backed with attractive beats and several backing vocals. When it comes to the bridge and chorus, the guitar and piano starts to get louder. Then it back to the beats and vocal again for the second verse, with several ad lib here and there. Then another bridge and chorus. Each member sang their own part one-by-one, until at the last part, they were harmonizing together. On the last part, the instrument also get louder for the climax.

Lyrics (3/5)

The first hook was the repeated words on the chorus. That "geuriwohaeyo" (missing you) part was both catchy and lyric-wise, appropriate. The song tells a story about hating and missing past love. To be able to portrayed a conflicting love story into to of 2 lines of verse, 3 lines of bridge, then chorus, (repeat verse, bridge & chorus), and the ending, was a top-notch job (applause for Teddy Park). There were some songs out there with full page lyrics but still cannot deliver the story well. But this piece was effectively written. Some English ad lib that were added on the 2nd verse and bridge was cool too.

As for the lyrics / solo part delegation, I was always wondering why Sandara always seems to have such short solo parts in 2NE1 songs. This time, she only did the vocalizing in the front and 2 lines of bridge - that's it. It seems odd for group of four with somewhat equal talent not to delegate a fair amount of 4 minutes, 30 lines song to each.

Performance (2.5/5)
Music Video :

I believe music video should support the song and vice-versa. "Missing You" music video portrayed a sad atmosphere with its dark & grey theme. It showed each member singing their part of the song in several settings. There was also one diamond-studded dark "ballerina".

Although they seemed to try to break out of the standard (the talk-of-the-town nude scene was worth it), but it still feels a bit stiff. For the members to only sit and singing their part, it didn't seem enough. From what I saw, only CL did an noticeable effort to acted and gave soul to the video. Others just seem to lip sync their part and rely on the decoration and setting to build the atmosphere. A little acting won't hurt, and I think it would be nice if there was a story line in the video also.

Live Performance :

I've watched 2 videos of 2NE1 performing this song; in MAMA 2013, and in Inkigayo (24-Nov-2013). Both, unfortunately, were not a good performance. In MAMA, there was a technical problem to blame, their voice was not projected well. In Inkigayo performance, CL didn't seem to be in her best condition. It was a pity, because she need to sang one of the important & powerful chorus. She seems to forced her vocal chord and it didn't sound very good. Bom did her part well, as expected. Minzy sounded very good, stable and on-key. Sandara, well.. there were not many of here part that could be analyzed, but she was a good team player, I guess?

Update (10 Dec 2013) :
I've watched another performance of them singing the song on M-Countdown 05 Dec 2013. Aanndd.. I was still not impressed. Bom seems like she had a hard time catching up tho the song's beat. CL still sounded like forcing her voice in the chorus. Even Minzy was a bit flustered at one point. And Sandara, well, she's still a good team player :/

But I appreciate the effort to not make a boring ballad performance with the standing position, sitting in the sofa, and together standing in the end. Though there's no black ballerina here, stage act wise, at least it's not a boring one.

That's what I thought, what do YOU think? Post a comment!
